The apartment
Three bedrooms, three bathrooms and the whole of the Downs out of the window
The top floor of Hill Lodge, a Grade II listed house on Lewes High Street whose Georgian front hides a timber frame older than the Great Fire of London.
You come in through your own white side door off the High Street, up a private staircase, and out into a light, dual-aspect living room with a window seat that looks south over the rooftops and gardens of Lewes to the South Downs. That view is why the apartment has the name it has, and it's the thing guests write about most.
There's a proper kitchen with a dining table under the beams, three bedrooms, three bathrooms (none of them en suite, so nobody is queuing and nobody is walking through anyone else's room), a desk if you have to work, and shelves of books and games if you don't. The rooms are big for a flat: the two main bedrooms have king-size beds, and the whole place comfortably takes six, with room for eight.
Two parking spaces across the road come with the booking.

Room by room
Living room and the view
Two blue sofas, a tufted ottoman, tall sash windows on two sides and the window seat. The reading corner has its own fireplace and shelves.
Kitchen and dining
A long, pale-blue kitchen under the beams with everything you need to cook for eight, and a dining table by the window seat. We leave milk, bread, tea, coffee and Nespresso pods for your first morning.
Bedrooms
Three bedrooms with two king-size beds, a double bed, a single bed, plus two sofa beds for a seventh and eighth guest. Good linen, comfortable beds (the thing guests mention second-most, after the view), and the heating thermostat lives in bedroom one.
Three bathrooms
Two showers and a corner bath, twin basins in the main bathroom, and the washing machine tucked into the second, so nobody has to wait for a shower.
Arriving
Hill Lodge from the High Street, the white side door with your key safe, and the private stairs up to the flat.

The house
An historic apartment, with real character
Hill Lodge stands on St Anne's Hill, a few doors from St Anne's, the oldest church in Lewes, on land once owned by the Pelhams. It probably began as a row of single-room cottages in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; around 1500 they were joined, raised to two storeys, and then given the extra top floor that is now the apartment. Remnants of the original roof are still hidden in the cupboards.
The Georgian owners dressed the front in an ashlar finish to look like fashionable stone, but the house is entirely timber-framed underneath, held up by huge oak beams inside the lath-and-plaster walls. The timber window frames on the façade tell you it predates 1666: after the Great Fire of London, external timber was banned. Look for the heritage glass in the windows, only two millimetres thick, which turns the view into something like an Impressionist painting.
In the 1920s the house was bought by Princess Chandra Cox of Siam, eldest daughter of the King of Siam and one of the royal children of The King and I, who lived here for many years with her husband, a timber merchant. A servant's diary from 1908 is in the apartment for you to read; she lived in the rooms you'll be sleeping in.

★★★★★
Stunning apartment with amazing views. Generous welcome pack too. We were in Lewes for a wedding so didn’t spend as much time in the apartment as we’d liked. It was a luxurious base for our 2 days. Lewes is such a pretty place and we’d love to come back to explore properly. Tom’s place is one of the best Air BnBs we’ve stayed in. Top notch! Parking across the road too was a real plus.
★★★★★
Gorgeous flat - really spacious and an interesting layout with beautiful features and spotlessly clean. We loved all the dual-aspect rooms and stunning views in the flat. It was a really lovely place to stay. Car parking just across the road was great, as were the kind extras such as wine and bread left in the fridge for us. We really loved staying here.

Excellent all round and Thomas was incredibly helpful!
★★★★★
Comfy huge double beds and has everything you need. On high street, perfect location for Lewes trip.

Lovely flat and such a nice view from the main lounge windows! Very handy that air con unit and fans were provided in the hot weather. Very comfortable beds. Great location for us as we were attending a wedding within walking distance.

★★★★★
Well maintained, tastefully furnished, characterful property, in a great location with everything you need for a fantastic holiday! The comfy window seat with the amazing views was my favourite spot for relaxing with a coffee and a book. Two parking spaces offered which was ideal for us as we were travelling quite far to attend our son’s wedding. Thank you Thomas, our stay was perfect and the Welsh cakes turned out fine 😁
★★★★★
It was a lovely place and Thomas was very responsive. We would. Happily stay again.
★★★★★
The property was delightful. My 3 sisters and elderly father stayed at the property for a 2 night stay, for some family time. Beautiful and excellent quality furnishings and decor with the beautiful views from the living room windows. Quirky, and well stocked with books, games, some food provisions, extra bedding, towels and toiletries. We missed nothing. We thoroughly enjoyed our staying in the lovely Lewes, and I would recommend without hesitation to anyone I know. Thank you!
★★★★★
Lovely accommodation with amazing views. Parking worked well and it was easy to find. The key safe didn't work but Thomas was on hand to help with the cases as the stairs are very narrow and steep. Otherwise the rooms are very well designed, the bedding super comfortable and it was great to have wine, butter, milk etc., all on hand. Overall a really lovely place and very easy to walk into Lewes and see the sights.
★★★★★
Thomas’s apartment is beautiful. And it was kind of him to leave some fans out for us (the weekend we stayed saw a heatwave).

Wonderful apartment in the centre of Lewes with incredible views. Everything was perfect, from the comfy beds to the well equipped kitchen, but the window seat overlooking the South Downs was our favourite thing about it.

Absolutely beautiful and comfortable property with great views. Very well equipped kitchen - we cooked in one evening. Appreciated the ample hot water after a long walk on the Downs. Parking opposite the property was a real bonus. Thomas was an excellent host - on hand, responsive, helpful and friendly. Would definitely return and explore more of the town's history and hostelries.

If you are looking for a traditional English Country style stay, this home was absolutely beautiful. The views were stunning, the kitchen was fully equipped, and the beds were incredibly comfortable with fantastic pillows. The living room felt wonderfully cosy, and the shower was hot and powerful everything we could have hoped for. We were genuinely delighted with our choice. Thomas was exceptionally responsive and so helpful both before and throughout our stay. He even assisted with parking arrangements, which made things much easier for our group as we arrived in three cars. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Highly recommended!
★★★★★
Thomas’s place has plenty of space - more than the two of us needed. We loved the views from the windows and the easy access to the town center. Thomas was really friendly and helpful when we had questions or needed anything. We would happily stay there again if returning to the area.
★★★★★
This place is lovely, just what you look for in an airbnb: friendly host, unique property, comfortable and well appointed. The view is a showstopper - I'd come back just for that!
★★★★★
We had a fantastic time at Tom's home, which is easily one of the best Airbnbs we've ever booked - plenty of space for our group of four, with lots of natural light, comfy beds, a well-stocked and spacious kitchen, and all very nicely decorated. The views from the reception and large bedroom were incredible. It was a perfect place to relax while exploring Lewes and beyond. Very walkable into town, but at a peaceful distance from the busier centre. Tom was very friendly and responsive, and provided incredibly clear instructions as well as lots of local recommendations and interesting reads. We look forward to returning to Lewes and staying here again!
★★★★★

★★★★★
This is the beginning of Thomas’s journey and we are thrilled to be able to leave one of his first reviews. This beautifully furnished and decorated, luxurious, spacious apartment is among the best we have ever experienced on AirB&B. Thoughtfully curated, everything you need is there - fully stocked kitchen, two wonderful bathrooms, luxurious bedrooms and bed linen, a gorgeous view high across the South Downs, and useful local information including the intriguing and delightful diary of a servant who used to work in the house a century ago (and lived in the space that is now the apartment). As long as Thomas’s journey continues, all he will leave behind is guests who are sad to leave. This is a wonderful space from which to see Lewes and Thomas is a kind and generous host.
★★★★★
Thomas was very responsive to all our needs and requests, the flat was very spacious, with wonderful views and full of comforts of home,eg books and jigsaws, and with a beautiful kitchen high spec and all the gadgets needed. Beds were extremely comfortable.

Fantastic stay, Thomas was really welcoming on arrival & gave us all the information to make the most of Lewes and his lovely house.
★★★★★
Wow! We (2 families) loved this beautiful, spacious, comfortable home from home. We never felt like we were on top of each other, kids and adults had plenty of space. It was easy to have a meal all together, to chat & hang out, and plan our days together. Lewes was also a perfect place for us to all explore & enjoy. We loved it was so walkable, but also easy to reach other towns on the south coast. Even though we had a few questions, Tom was extremely patient & quickly responded with answers to our questions- thank you! Don’t miss the Pelham Arms, a really lovely, friendly pub with excellent food! We had the best bank holiday weekend, & would all love to come again.
